This recording is a bit drum-heavy and lacking on the vocals, but it seems to get better as it goes on. It sounds like we had somewhat of an audience for the first set, but they eventually dwindled away until we were playing for Skip the bartender and Aric's girlfriend Gwen. The best thing that happened this night was that at the very end a couple of random guys wandered in off the street and went absolutely ape-shit bonkers when one of them requested KISS and we supplied it. The one guy was near-psychotic with glee. Probably the most intense reaction we ever got at any show...and all for playing KISS covers.

Notes : THE STORY OF SHADOWS LOUNGE - Shadows Lounge was a little shack at a crossroads out in some farmland between Sioux Falls and Tea. I think they sometimes had strippers during the week and cover bands on the weekends. I think Aric got us the gig(s) here. The owner had this brilliant new idea to have bands play on Sunday afternoons. I think we went from like 4-8pm. On a Sunday. During football season. Yeah. Nobody showed up. Duh. They even went so far as to do some radio advertising for this show, which I bemusedly heard a number of times in the car. It didn't work. From listening to the recording, I'm pretty sure the only person in the audience was my wife Solvei. Add to this the fact that we had just played Phil's Pub the night before, so we were probably tired and annoyed to be there playing for no one. Despite it all, we played it off legit and got the hell out of there. Then 3 weeks later, we went back for another gig under the same circumstances. What were we thinking? Anyway, the 2nd gig (Show 13) was tons more fun because when we realized that once again no one was showing up, we stopped caring and started playing songs we didn't know for hours. That was a lot more fun.

Other Bands: None. We played 4 sets.

Notes : All four sets were recorded, and unfortunately all four suffer from some ear splitting distortion on the vocals. It's a shame, because from the little bit I could bear to listen to, we were having fun and the crowd was great.

In this shot you can see the fire escape (mentioned in the notes for Show 15) just to the left of the Pub.

Other Bands: None. We played 5 (!) sets.

Notes : After our first visit to Shadows Lounge (Show 11), I'm not sure why we came back again. We ended up playing five sets, the fifth being almost complete useless noise. I have no idea why they didn't tell us to get the fuck out, but after all was said and done, almost 3 1/2 hours were recorded. Throughout this adventure, our audience consisted of Guido the bartender, and no more than two people at any given time. Things went sour midway through the third set (just before "Light My Fire") when some chick yelled "play something NORMAL!". After that...IT WAS ON! In true Ten Center tradition, we transitioned into a couple hours of covers that we didn't know how to play.

Date : 10.07.95 [Saturday](Show 14)
Location : Phil's Pub, Sioux Falls SD
Source Recording : Tascam 488 8-Track
Other Bands: We opened for ourselves as a lounge cover band called DOG SWEATERS

Notes : The tag on the flyer ("Would It Really Kill You To Come Out And See Us?") says a lot about our attitude on Phil's Pub at the time. This was the last gig of what I call our "Summer Residency" at Phil's (we played there once a month from April through October, most times to a near empty room). I like the recording, it was a pretty loose night due to the fact that we just didn't really care anymore. Gigs at Phil's had become dress rehearsals for us. Despite that, there are a number of interesting things about this show that you should know before listening:

1. We opened for ourselves as "fake" band DOG SWEATERS, playing covers out of a fake book. We never rehearsed this together...we just went up with the pages copied out of the fake book and played. Three people witnessed this set. Skip the bartender and a couple playing pool. By some bizarre synchronicity, just seconds before we were about to play "Walk This Way", the chick playing pool goes "PLAY AEROSMITH". Incredible.

2. Mike was using a new percussion instrument this night that I dubbed The "Explode-O-Gong". In reality, what actually happened is that I had duct taped one of the recording microphones to one of his cymbal stands, and everytime he hits that cymbal...you WILL hear it. Just pretend it's a huge KISS-esque flash-pot explosion.

3. A couple more people wandered in after the Dog Sweaters set, including Matt "Sideshow" Staab of The Sneakies, who went on a mission to drink 100 ounces of beer. Not sure if he made it.

4. I had recently found out that Aric's girlfriend Gwynne played the Bassoon, and demanded that she come sit in with us somehow. The result was "Gwynne's Bassoon Blues".

Location : Main Street Pub, Vermillion, SD
Source Recording : Tascam 488 8-Track
Other Bands : None. We played three sets.

Notes : A very fun Main Street Pub show. The version of "Ballad Of Helen" from this show is my single favorite Ten Center recording of all of them. This version features some random guy coming up and reciting some poetry/rap and also features me walking out the front door of the pub and down the street while soloing (thanks to my wireless unit). I remember walking next door and sitting on the stairs of a fire escape, watching cars go by while soloing. The band always set up in the front window, so I had no problems hearing them from outside. If you were to listen to this show all the way through, you'll notice that the crowd gets better and better as the night goes on, and that reflects in our stage banter and demeanor. By the end of the night, it felt like we were all friends. Sorry about the horrible tuning problems I was having.

Other Bands : The Sneakies opened.

Notes : Not sure why we relied so heavily on butchered 60's songs and KISS covers. The familiar "I had a horse, his name was Jack, I rode on his tail to save his back" refrain in "Ballad Of Helen" is replaced by "I killed my daddy with a shotgun blast, I don't know what happened, it happened so fast." This is a reference to our previous show at the Main Street Pub (Show 15) and the special guest rapper. Also, I think the beginning of the set is missing because someone forgot to start the tape. Pretty sure we didn't open with "My Baby Works At Burger King". Despite the fact that this was recorded on Four-Track, there was actually just one mono track, which I think must have been a single microphone pointed at the stage.

Other Bands : This was a "Battle of the Bands". A number of other bands played

Notes : Ah, the obligatory "Battle Of The Bands". We were allowed a 20-minute set. We did not win anything. We drove the 60 miles North from Sioux Falls in a particularly nasty ice storm. Many cars in the ditches. We were lucky to make it. The "ballroom" was more of a gym with a permanent stage at one end. The hardwood floors were covered with wrestling mats for protection. At the time, I was using a wireless unit, and I used to enjoy walking away from the band occasionally during solos. On this particular night, I decided to leave the stage and run a lap around the gym while soloing. I figured this might score some points with the judges. I punctuated my run with a leap into the air before returning to the stage. Miscalculating the traction that would result from the aforementioned wrestling mats, when I landed my feet firmly planted themselves, and the inertia of the rest of my body sent me face-first to the floor...on top of my guitar. Somehow it did not snap in half. This amazing event can be heard at exactly the 4:00 mark of "Ballad Of Helen".

Location : Joe House, Brookings, SD

Other Bands : None. We played three sets.

Notes : This was our first show back in action after taking a holiday break. We had not played live for 2 months. At some point during those two months, I had apparently decided that what the band really needed was a dynamic frontman. This can be witnessed during the first set, as I displayed my new short-lived on-stage personality that I now refer to as a cross between Paul Stanley and Ted Nugent. This kind of behavior tends to fall flat when the only members of the audience are the drummer's parents (Mike's parents were at this gig for some reason, and I'm pretty sure I embarrassed the hell out of him). Also working against us this night were my insistence on playing incredibly loud (you will hear the crunchiest guitar tone ever, punctuated by lots of feedback), and the fact that another Sioux Falls band (Stranded With Norman) were playing two doors down at a place that served alcohol. Joe House, as you may have guessed, was a coffee bar. Ten Center is not coffee house music, to say the least.

Other Bands : This was a festival event with a whole bunch of bands. The other ones I remember were Scratch That (Vermillion), Watercolor Fiction (Sioux Falls) and Little Scotty And The Big Tones (Vermillion?). Mike was also playing drums for Scotty at the time, so he did double duty at this show.

Notes : This was a benifit concert for Steve Peterson, a friend of Mike's, who had recently had a house fire (at his trailer out in the middle of nowhere - we played his front lawn later in the year [Show 24]). There were a number of Sioux Falls and Vermillion bands playing. The Eagles Club is a fraternal lodge type place...like a VFW. I liked this show a lot. The sound was good, the crowd was responsive. Actual dancing took place at random intervals. We used some other band's amps, which is nice. Walk in with a guitar case and start playing. No messy load-in and set-up.

Other Bands : None. We played three sets.

Notes : This is probably my favorite recording of all of them. It sounds really good, it shows what we had become as a band over a year's worth of live shows, and I have extremely fond memories of playing the Main Street Pub. Vermillion is a small town anchored by the University of South Dakota, and unlike the slightly jaded Sioux Falls music scene of the day, it was brimming with college kids who were looking to have fun instead of just stand around with their hands in their pockets. I liked this show so much that it became the basis for the official Ten Center live release LIVE : GEARED TO ANNOY. All but one song on that release came from this show. This was our fourth and final show at the Main Street Pub, and Mike had been living in Vermillion for 7 or 8 years, so I think he pretty much knew everyone in town connected with music and we had built somewhat of a following by then.

Notes : We played 3 sets this night. Due to some technical idiocy on my part, only about a third of it got recorded. The first eight songs are pretty much a linear representation of what got recorded from the first set. The rest of it is what could be salvaged from the other two. There's a lot of chatter about "mains". Not only did we have recording problems, but also PA problems. I'm not really sure if the handful of people that were watching us were even hearing the vocals half the time. The vocals on the recording are direct from the PA board, thankfully. The most entertaining part of the recording for me is the drunken requests from a couple of older women. This was also the first show for my cherished '74 Les Paul Goldtop Deluxe.

Notes : If I remember correctly, this night just started out as a normal practice at our usual spot at SDPR in Vermillion, and then we somehow ended up playing this bonfire party in the front yard of a trailer house on a piece of land out in the middle of nowhere. There was a state highway running in front of the yard, so people would drive by and see this band playing, and one even pulled over and watched for a while, but refused our repeated invitations to come join the party. This is a recording of the 2nd of 2 sets we did.

Date : 06.09.96 [Sunday](Show 25)
Location :Jono's, Sioux Falls, SD
Source Recording : No known recording exists.
Other Bands : The bill from top to bottom was - Ten Center, Neo-Johnsons (cover band, Sioux Falls), Wise Guy (Country? I don't remember)

Notes : The Jonofests in the mid-90's were held in their parking lot. The bands played on a flatbed. Not sure how we ever got on the bills, we didn't really fit, but Jono was a pretty cool guy and had no real biases as far as what kind of bands he would have in his bar. On the other hand, he didn't pay, so I guess free attraction for him!

Date : 07.11.96 [Thursday](Show 26)
Location : Pomp Room, Sioux Falls, SD
Source Recording : Mono VHS Camera
Other Bands : The bill from top to bottom was - L.A.M.F. (Johnny Thunders cover band, Sioux Falls), The Sneakies (Sioux Falls), Ten Center.

Notes : This was the final Ten Center show. Russ went on to join The Sneakies, Mike played Vibes in a surf/instrumental band called The Gahoons (Sioux Falls), Aric joined Evan Peta's Aladdin Sane (Mitchell, SD). Despite this being our last show, we debuted three new cover songs which we had never even practiced before, other than a quick unplugged run-through behind the club after soundcheck. ("I Want You To Want Me" - added because Cheap Trick had played the club the night before, "Pablo Picasso", and "Bobby Brown Goes Down") I am sooooo fucking pissed that Bobby Brown got cut off.
